DIET/Ordering Food
Diet is essential to the birds health. We have had vast training and have spent many hours educating the public concerning diet of exotic birds. The old thoughts that seed diets alone were appropriate for exotic birds has been proven to be untrue. These diets are high in fat and very bad for your birds. Study's have shown that in the wild, parrots eat somewhere around 500 different foods. Luckily the company's that sell food now sell a formulated pelleted diet that completely meet the needs and variety that make up a healthy parrot diet. At F.E.B.S. we feed fresh fruit and vegtables every morning, these are eaten up right away! You need to be careful of leaving fresh food in the heat as it will go bad, so make sure all is consumed within an hour then discard whats left, wash the bowl out daily to further prevent bacterial problems. Dry pelleted food such as "Pretty Bird", "Zupreem", "Exact" "Roudybush" is available all day as long as it does not get wet, it can be left in the bowls all day. In the afternoon we have what we love to call "Nut Party" The macaws can crack large nuts in the shell so thats what they get! Smaller birds can have peanuts, some sunflower, pumkin seed or a really good quality seed diet such as Fiesta Parrot . Just not too much!!! Then in the evening the dry food (pellets) are topped off. Sometimes to add a bit of variety I will mix some of the higher end seed and fruit and nut diets in with the fruits and veggies. Absolutely no Avocato's or Chocolate as these two things are toxic to birds!
In June of 2007 we will begin offering a product line of our special diet that is proven to be the best mixture for all types of birds here at the Sanctuary, proceeds will go back into helping feed the birds here!
